About addressing messages

You can address a message by typing a valid e-mail address on the To tab and other address tabs in the address window:

When you send a message to someone in your Address Book, you don't need to look up the address; Microsoft Outlook Express looks it up for you. When you start typing a name or e-mail address on the To, Cc, or Bcc tab of the address window, a menu appears that lists names and addresses in your Address Book that match the letters you have typed. As you type more letters, the list is updated to show only names that still match. You can click the correct recipient as soon as you see it on the list.

You can also look up people in your default directory service when you address the message. Just type the person's name, and then click Check Names.

Tip The symbol next to a recipient's e-mail address indicates the status of the address.

Look up a recipient's address

If you do not know a person's e-mail address, Microsoft Outlook Express can look it up for you in your default directory service.

  1. In the address window for a message, type the recipient's name on the To, Cc, or Bcc tab.
  2. Click Check Names.

Note After Outlook Express checks your default directory service for a recipient's address, a symbol appears next to the recipient's name and indicates the status of the address.
Tip You can also set up Outlook Express to automatically look up e-mail addresses in your default directory service. On the Edit menu, click Preferences. On the Compose tab, select the Check names on message recipient(s) check box.
